E-Hawk Buddy

We have welcomed Will Schany, a 10th grader from Emmetsburg High School, to our classroom on Thursday afternoons as one of our Ehawk Buddies!  We enjoy having Will come to read, play games, and sing songs with us!

Fun making our scarecrow

We read the story The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything this past week.  We learned some new vocabulary words:  afraid and cottage.  We also had to remember the order of the story.  We helped read the repetitive phrases and can retell the story when we visit the library center.

We then made a class scarecrow to help decorate our room for fall.

Thank you Mrs. Larson for being our Guest Reader!

We were a great audience at Shrek this morning!  We sat for almost 2 1/2 hours to watch the show in the high school auditorium.  It was funny and we were excited to give the characters a big "high-five" on our way out-they did such a great job!

We also want to say thank you to Mrs. Larson for coming this afternoon to be our guest reader for DEAR day!  She got us in the Halloween spirit by reading We're Going on a Ghost Hunt.  We were able to read along with her during the repetitive portions.  We look forward to having her come read to us again next month.

Hunter Star of the Week

This past week, we celebrated Hunter as our star of the week.  Thanks for sharing with us Hunter!

Site visit to the Pumpkin Patch

We visited the pumpkin patch at Scuffham's Garden on Thursday, October 16th.  It was a great day for learning about pumpkins, gourds and squash!  We met Helen in her yard and she showed us the big pumpkins!  We enjoyed climbing up on the hayrack for a class picture with them.  She showed us her farm store and many different kinds of pumpkins.  We learned that the secret is in the seed!  We were able to explore the pumpkin patch and complete observational drawings of the growing pumpkins.

Thank you for being our guest reader Mrs. Straw!

We had a special guest reader visit our classroom today!  Mrs. Straw, Lily's mom and a first grade teacher here at West Elem., came to our classroom this morning to read to us for DEAR day.  She shared the story The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin.  Thank you for reading to us, Mrs. Straw!  Please let me know if you are interested to come read to us.

ps-We looked for square pumpkins at the pumpkin patch today but did not see any!

Reading with Kari from the public library

Wednesday, October 15

Kari Gramowski, librarian from the Emmetsburg Public Library, came to our classroom this morning to read with us.  She shared a book about a dog who kept getting different colored spots on him!  By the end of the story, he was a rainbow of spots!  We had fun counting spots.

Learning about emotions and feelings with Ms. Schiek

Today we had Guidance with Ms. Schiek.  We were great at recognizing different emotions on pictures of kids and thinking why they might be feeling happy, sad, worried, frustrated, etc.  We were also great at making our faces look different ways!

Enjoying a fun snack!

Lauren was our snack bringer on Friday and she brought us a fun spooky snack!  Here we are enjoying the witches warts, ghost poop, monster scabs and goblin teeth.  Lily and Mrs. Farnsworth are having extra fun with the teeth!

Celebrating Madison as our "Star of the Week"

We will take turns celebrating all of our friends in our classroom with "Star of the Week."  Madison was our first friend to have a
turn.  She brought in some pictures to share and her "All About Me" poster.  She also brought a favorite toy to share. Thanks for sharing with us Madison!

Fun digging carrots

We enjoyed our visit to the ILCC garden on Friday afternoon.  We met our friend, Calvin Christensen, at the garden.  He showed us the rows of carrots growing in the garden.  We could see the green stems and leaves sticking out of the dirt.  When we looked closely down at the dirt, we could see orange carrot tops sticking out!  Cal used a pitchfork to dig a carrot for each of us.  Most of the carrots were very long and big.

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

Cal Christensen, local gardener, came to our classroom to answer our questions about how seeds grow!  He did a great job comparing seeds to a baby.  When the seed grows up, it will look like its parent!  Tomato seeds will make a tomato and cucumber seeds will make a cucumber!  He also talked about how each baby seed has its own lunchbox to start growing right away with water and temperature.  Then as the seed grows into a plant it will need soil to get more food, air and sunlight.  He also brought different seeds, the picture of the plant or fruit with a label for us to study.  Thank you Cal!  We will be visiting Cal again this Friday on a field trip to the garden at ILCC.

We've been busy learning about seeds.  Mrs. Patton, Palo Alto County Naturalist, came to our classroom to show us different seeds and also talked about how seeds "move."  Here are a few pictures to check out what we learned!
